"WARNING: Cannot find root file system!" when booting Live CD

Using the following setup:

Abit IP35 Pro
Intel Q6600
eVGA 8800GTS
Lite-On DVDRW LH-20A1S

to boot Fedora 8 Live CD X86

I recieve the error message soon after it loads the kernel off the disc:

"When I try to boot up the live cd I get these messages:

WARNING: Cannot find root file system!

Create symlink /dev/root and then exit this shell to continue the
boot sequence."

I have tried my drives in AHCI and IDE modes, to no avail. I can install successfully in a VM and have tried re-burning the image.

Any ideas?

I've seen this with other live cd distros. Usually fixed by using a different CD-ROM drive.
If it ain't broken - you're not really trying....
