F8 on VMWare - haldaemon fails to start up

On VMware workstation 6 with F8 the haldaemon often (but not always) fails to start up.

It appears that what ever causes the failure of the haldaemon causes the virtual network device to go done and the virtual machine is off the network. If you log in later and restart networking the network comes up.

Hardware is a quad core HP box running windows XP SP2. VMware tools are installed.

Any suggestions.
