package manager link from file manager

I've recently re-installed Fedora 9 after a bad experience with the gnome desktop ; i should never have looked at desktop effects.

All works ok except for new packages such as flash plugin or Adobe reader which won't install either from the Firefox download or by clicking on them wiithin the file manager, although they install perfectly through bash using yum.

The error message in Firefox is that an unexplained error has occurred together with a recommendation that the package is installed via file manager. When file manager is used, nothing happens at all, not even an error message

Yum works perfectly so it must be a problem with the package manager link somewhere. Any ideas?
