Unable to rename network card by mac address

This relates to a fedora 7 installation

It looks like system-config-network gui is not functional, set the network card to a designation, say eth0 and it reverts to previous

nameif eth0 mac address works for during that login session,

network card keeps forcing itself to eth0 during reboot, and this wont work for heartbeat settup.

any ideas perhaps?

Here is the distro-agnostic way, using udev:

# http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html#example-netif
# http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Customizing_UDEV
# Match based on MAC address:
# udevinfo -a -p /sys/class/net/eth0 | grep -i address
# udevinfo -a --name /dev/ttyUSB0
# http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-489863.html (howto guide)
# http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-512201.html
# MAC addresses must be in lower-case.
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{address}=="00:1a:60:54:5d:c0", NAME="lan"
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{address}=="00:1b:60:55:28:1d", NAME="inet"
Notice that the filename is not arbitrary - the *first* setting of NAME= takes precedence (read "man udev"), so 10 is a nice low number to ensure it is processed before other such rules.
