What is the output of the error message, if any?
[sayeeth@somebody ~]$ kill bill
bash: kill: bill: arguments must be process or job IDs

Is there a specific reason you are trying to install an outdates version. 1.4.2 is availabe via yum. Here is the FedoraFaq for installing it.

If you use yum (yum install mozilla-j2re) or synaptic, it'll be easier.

Download the lastest Java plugin from http://java.sun.com

j2re-1_4_2_05-linux-i586-rpm (lastest stable version)

convert .bin to .rpm first b4 install it.
j2re-1_4_2_05-linux-i586-rpm.bin => j2re-1_4_2_05-linux-i586.rpm

install rpm file
rpm -ivh j2re-1_4_2_05-linux-i586.rpm

make link

cd /usr/lib/mozilla-1.7.3/plugin (for fedora 2 with lastest mozilla update)

ln -sf /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_05/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so

make sure this link file "libjavaplugin_oji.so" in mozilla plugin folder

try your best.... must work!
