Unhappy Re: Howto - Java JRE plugin on Firefox for Fedora 14

Hi there,

Recently, I was trying to install java plugin on firefox 14.0.1 under Fedora 14 (64bit)
and I failed. Please help me resolve the problem. I did the following,

To install the plugin
# yum install java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin

made a link in a mozilla plugin dir. (/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins)
When I installed it made a link 'IcedTeaPlugin.so' but still I made a new link there
as mentioned in earlier discussions
# ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-openjdk.x86_64/lib/amd64/IcedTeaPlugin.so libnpjp2.so

But still java does not work on my machine.
I tried to make one more link in my local profile dir. also but in vain

Please help me resolve the issue.

Re: Howto - Java JRE plugin on Firefox for Fedora 14

I had the exact problem and it took me a day to figure out. Here are my steps.

find and remove your mozilla/firefox pluginreg.dat file. (Mine was under $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/i8g05r0z.default) Then run firefox from the command line so you can see the errors as it rebuilds the plugin registry.

Mine was
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/java/jre1.7.0_05/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so [/usr/java/jre1.7.0_05/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64]

now I do a file /usr/java/jre1.7.0_05/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
to see what ELF it is.
doing the same thing on my firefox executable - turns out my firefox - after upgrade - become 32 bit and my plugins where 64 bit

then lots of changes to get them on the same flavor.

Re: Howto - Java JRE plugin on Firefox for Fedora 14

@cygx1: That works (using java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin ) but then you end up with the obsolete Java 6. The best practice would be to install the two packages:
java-1.7.0-openjdk icedtea-web
of which the icedtea-web gives you the browser plugin and the first one gives you the JDK 7 for java.
